UK's 2009 Emissions Down

Data released by Dept of Energy show that UK’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
fell almost 9% in 2009 compared with 2008. The basket of six gases reportable
under the Kyoto Protocol fell to 574 million tonnes ( 628Mt in 2008). CO2 that makes up
85% of the basket fell by 52 million tonnes. The figures exclude emissions of products
made abroad or the UK’s share of shipping and aviation emissions. The main reason for the
fall was a significant drop in energy demand by industry going through deep recession.

FOE is camapigning for a reduction by 42% over 1990 level by 2020
