CONFIRMED: Northern A27 Route Dropped

Published in the Chichester Observer on the 4th March 2016

The government has confirmed that no alternative A27 routes around Chichester will be now be considered.

It means neither a new northern bypass through Lavant, or a partial new southern route, will be built, and instead the junctions on the existing stretch will be upgraded.

In a letter to Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert, the parliamentary under secretary for transport, Andrew Jones MP, confirmed the northern options ‘which could impact on the Goodwood estate’ would be dropped.

Clarifying Highways England’s statement that its focus ‘would be on upgrading four junctions on the existing A27’, Mr Jones’ letter said: “To be clear, this will not include alternative routes which have been previously considered, such as a northern route which could impact on the Goodwood estate.”

As reported, the seven-week public consultations, due to start in just days, have now been pushed back until late spring/early summer.
