THE fight continues to put green matters on the political agenda, a meeting heard.
Havant’s environmentalists have reaffirmed their commitment to clean beaches, air and water, as well as more renewable energy in the district.
In her report to members at the annual meeting of Havant Friends of the Earth, group co-ordinator Sue Holt said, ‘The UN’s Paris emissions agreement in December makes every community responsible for protecting our natural resources.’
The highlight of the group’s year was arranging the general election hustings, where candidates were quizzed by 140 residents on environmental issues.
Among the various events was a presentation on geothermal energy exploring how Havant might benefit by tapping into the warm water aquifers deep under the ground.
Members met Havant MP Alan Mak and briefed him on solar energy and recycling and raised concerns over the government’s watering down of green measures and its enthusiasm for fracking.
