Re-development could change the face of Havant

A far-reaching scheme involving the demolition of existing older buildings around East and North streets in the town centre is being discussed by Havant Council.

The scheme is seen as a way of reviving Havant Town centre and consists of flats and terraced houses with some new retail units.

The Roman crossroads would be altered to create a new square with the removal of walls around the church and the opening up of the graveyard.

So far it’s claimed the scheme is merely conceptual but the 137-year old White Hart pub on the corner has closed and been sold off cheaply for £150,000.

Many questions remain about the fate of the war memorial, the yew tree in the church grounds, traffic implications and architectural considerations in a conservation area.
