Making Havant a greener town

Published in the Portsmouth News on 14th March 2011

A VOLUNTARY group which is attempting to transform a town into a greener community has celebrated its first birthday.

The Havant Transition Network’s members want to change the attitude of residents, encouraging them to become a low-energy, low-waste, more resilient and self-reliant community.

So far the group has installed a recycling point for low-energy bulbs in the Meridian Centre, West Street and set up the Havant quilt project where residents are working together to make a giant patchwork quilt using recycled materials reflecting parts of the town’s history.

They are also planning a community play called Bob and Doris Are Not Afraid. The play offers the opportunity for ordinary people to become involved in a creative project exploring climate change.

The group celebrated at The Pavilion with live music and a cake decorated with the group’s logo.
