Havant FOE Newsletter - March 2023

The group now has a new committee with Sue James as Coordinator, Dan Groves as Assistant Coordinator, Wilf Forrow as Treasurer and Secretary and Patricia Williamson as Membership Secretary.

Sue Holt, who has stepped down as Coordinator, has been involved for 20 years and so we are all really grateful to her for the work she has done. She’s not leaving us, just standing down

We do plan to sort out the mailing system and to set up some public meetings as well as move forward on FOE campaigns like United for Warm Homes and get Havant Borough Big Green Week under way. So, offers of help would be more than welcome.

Recycled Effluent in Havant Thicket Reservoir.

Hopefully, everyone in HFOE has seen and signed our petition, asking Defra to delay Southern Water’s plans for pumping recycled effluent in the new Havant Thicket Reservoir.

HFOE members have spent a lot of time responding to the consultations (which have now closed) and encouraging people to sign but please do persuade your contacts to support us.

We are amazed by how many local people seem totally unaware of the plans.

The Methane Problem

Methane is a really powerful greenhouse gas which is responsible for more than 25 per cent of the warming we are experiencing today. (IPCC) It has a Global Warming Potential more than 80 times greater than that of carbon dioxide.

There are lots of relatively cheap solutions; the government and industry have pledged to take action but there’s very little action so far. We have invited two speakers to join us on Wednesday 8th (7pm on Zoom) so do join us.

United for Warm Homes

A big campaign we are working on is United for Warm Homes

The goals are to persuade the government to fund

  • Urgent additional financial support to keep people warm
  • A nationwide insulation programme
  • Permanent fixes to our failed energy system

We’re planning another open meeting on this soon but the idea is to build local support in and then put pressure on MPs and candidates for the 2024 General Election

Havant Borough Big Green Week is being planned for the 10-18th June and we could really do with help in getting more events organised, sharing information and so on.

The Government’s attack on nature protections.

Another FOE petition to sign. We need to halt the UK government’s plans to abolish laws which protect our health and environment
