Hayling Island fields could be turned into new housing estate

CONTROVERSIAL plans to build 130 homes on fields on Hayling Island will be revealed tomorrow.

Tolcarne Drive Developments wants to build houses on land north of Goldring Close and south of Beech Grove.

A public exhibition has been arranged at the Royal British Legion in Legion Road.

But the housing plan has shocked islanders.

Only recently they were consulted by Havant Borough Council on whether the site should be developed at all.

Following feedback from residents, the council will decide which open spaces are to be put forward for development.

But developers could submit a planning application before this process has been completed.

Terry Worrall, chairman of Hayling Island Community Network, said: ‘The council has not confirmed the outcome of the recent negotiations that have been going on.

‘They have jumped the gun.’

The prospect of building on the site sparked the Save Hayling campaign, when more than 4,000 people signed a petition calling for no more large-scale development until roads and facilities on the island were improved.

Residents are particularly worried about residential roads coping with the extra traffic.

John Watson, from Tolcarne Drive Developments, said: ‘Local opinion is important to us and we would encourage anyone who has a question or is interested in the project to come along to discuss the plans with us.

‘We have gathered an extensive amount of information on the site already and this consultation will form an integral part of our moving forward with this project.

‘We believe the site is suitable for much-needed new homes on the island and is in a sustainable location close to shops, schools and services.’
